Department of English Studies Day and Evening Courses

Department of English Studies

The Department of English Studies welcomes students with the following interests and qualities:

  1. Those who are interested in the various languages, literatures, cultures, and societies of English-speaking countries.
  2. Those who are able to make efforts toward precisely understanding the language of ideas, and clearly expressing those ideas in both Japanese and English.
  3. Those who have intellectual curiosity and a spirit of inquiry.

In modern-day international society, English plays an ever-greater role as the language of international discourse. The aim of the Department of English Studies is to help to develop truly powerful, internationally minded citizens who have solid English proficiency and wide-ranging knowledge.

In required English classes, students acquire well-balanced speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Additionally, students choose their courses depending on their interests and study them in depth in small classes, allowing them to acquire specialized knowledge in language, literature, culture, and society. At the same time, cross-cultural understanding is deepened and developed.  And in small, group seminars, professors help students to develop skills that will be needed in their fields of expertise, as well as in the writing of their theses, and later on, in the making of professional presentations.

The Department of English Studies is a place where students can fulfill their potentials to become cosmopolitan citizens, and acquire world-class confidence in their skills.

Curriculum

In the Department of English Studies, we nurture truly powerful, internationally-minded people who have sound English-language abilities, wide-ranging knowledge, deep understanding of English-speaking cultures and societies, and solid communications skills.

Students will acquire a high level of proficiency in English in required classes, in addition to learning about the language itself.  Furthermore, in basic subject classes, a variety of English-language cultures will be studied.  Also, by learning other languages in addition to English, students will look at the language and cultures of English-speaking nations from different points of view.

Students will individually choose specialized courses depending on their interests, and acquire specialized knowledge in literature, language, and society.  Additionally and importantly, students will acquire the skills necessary for international communication and cross-cultural understanding.

Department of English Studies Evening Course

The Department of English Studies Evening Course welcomes students with the following interests and qualities:

  1. Those who are interested in the various languages, literatures, cultures, and societies of English-speaking countries.
  2. Those who are able to make efforts toward precisely understanding the language of ideas, and clearly expressing those ideas in both Japanese and English.
  3. Those who are able and willing to combine work with their studies.

In the Department of English Studies Evening Course, students are mainly offered evening lessons (17:50-21:00). However, these lessons are quite similar to those of the Department of English Studies Day Course in terms of professors, subjects, and departmental goals.  Because the Evening Course includes both traditional and non-traditional students, lessons are organized to provide discussions from various aspects. Students of the department can choose from one of three courses, and they can acquire technical knowledge in each field of study.  Also, they can earn regular credits from the Day Course if they are constrained by regular school hours.

This department also aims at imparting technical knowledge in the fields of language, literature, culture and society.   Students are offered lectures and lessons in small classes where they can cultivate their English skills.

If a student’s situation changes, a departmental transfer exam is offered to those students wishing to transfer to the Day Course.  Also, a special selective examination is carried out for adults who wish to enter the university.

With curriculum and requirements similar to those of the Day Course, the Department of English Studies Evening Course aims at graduating students who are highly skilled in their use of the English language.

Students are mainly offered lessons which are quite similar to those of the Department of English Studies Day Course in terms of the curriculum and professors. However, this department aims at making more remarkable progress with English and acquiring a profound understanding of technical knowledge by taking up various subjects in academic fields such as history, culture, literature, language, communication, business, and society, while placing great importance on their relevance to English and English-speaking countries.
