ゼロカーボンの取組（竹ワークショップ、コンポスト展示会）を実施
11月１日（土曜）、２日（日曜）、本学の学園祭において、本学国際関係学科のSingh准教授と同教員の研究指導を履修する学生が、KOBEゼロカーボン支援補助金制度に採択された２つの企画を実施しました。
11月1日（土曜）には、「竹あかり作り」と「竹モルック体験」の2種類のサステナビリティ・ワークショップが開催されました。使用された竹は、須磨区白川地区で主に同研究指導の履修学生が伐採したものです。当日は、本学の学生、教職員、地域の方など60人以上が参加し、活気あふれるイベントになりました。
このワークショップは、同研究指導を履修する大学院生による研究活動の一環として実施されました。竹は放置すると生態系の乱れや土砂災害の原因となり、近年全国的に問題視されています。そこで、今回のワークショップでは、白川地区の放置竹林を伐採し、環境に優しい持続可能な活用方法を提案することで、資源の循環利用および脱炭素への意識を高めることが目的とされました。
参加者からは、「竹という素材の可能性を改めて感じた」「モルックが転がる音に日本らしさを感じた」などの感想が寄せられました。イベントを通して、大学と地域社会の有意義な交流が生まれ、小規模ながらも地域密着型の活動がSDGsや神戸市が掲げるゼロカーボン社会の実現に貢献できることが示されました。今回得られた知見は、白川地区における竹資源の利活用やコンポストに関する今後の研究に活かされる予定です。

11月2日（日曜）には、「コンポスト展示会」が開催され、同研究指導で推進されている家庭用コンポストおよびキャンパスコンポストの取組が紹介されました。現在準備中のキャンパスコンポストに関するプロジェクトは、大学食堂から発生する生ごみを堆肥化し、その生成量や温室効果ガス削減効果を評価することを目的としています。今回の展示は、同研究指導の履修学生によるコンポストプロジェクトの初めての発表の場となり、Singh准教授とその研究指導を履修する学生による、持続可能な未来に向けた実践的で研究に基づく取組の発信機会となりました。
当日は、幅広い年齢層の方が訪れ、有機ごみの削減や温室効果ガスの排出抑制におけるコンポストの重要性について高い関心が寄せられました。
また、両日とも会場には同研究指導の学生による研究ポスターが展示され、気候変動、プラスチック汚染、海洋ごみなど、さまざまな環境問題のテーマについて紹介されました。これらの展示を通して、Singh准教授とその研究指導を履修する学生が実践する学際的な環境問題解決へのアプローチが示されました。

Zero-Carbon Initiatives: Bamboo Workshops and Compost Exhibition Held
On November 1st (Saturday) and 2nd (Sunday), the annual university festival was held at Kobe City University of Foreign Studies (KCUFS). Associate Professor Singh and students taking his seminars organized two sustainability-focused activities - the Bamboo Workshops on the first day and the Compost Exhibition on the second day - both selected for the Kobe Zero Carbon Support Subsidy Program.
On November 1st (Saturday), Associate Professor Singh and his seminar students held two sustainability workshops: Bamboo Lantern Making and Bamboo Mölkky, using bamboo harvested in the Shirakawa area of Suma Ward mainly by the seminar students. The event was full of energy and excitement, with over 60 participants, including students, faculty, and local residents, taking part in the activities.
The workshops were conducted as part of research by a graduate student of the seminar. Unmanaged bamboo has increasingly been recognized as a nationwide issue in Japan, as it can cause ecological imbalance and lead to sediment disasters. The workshops were designed to promote resource circulation and enhance awareness of decarbonization by harvesting abandoned bamboo in the Shirakawa district and proposing environmentally sustainable methods of bamboo utilization.
Participants shared their impressions such as, "I realized the potential of bamboo as a material." and "The sound of rolling bamboo in Mölkky made me feel the Japaneseness." The event fostered meaningful interaction between the university and the local community, showcasing how small-scale, community-based activities can contribute to the SDGs and Kobe's zero-carbon vision. Insights gained will support ongoing research on bamboo resource utilization and composting in the Shirakawa area.
On November 2nd (Sunday), the Compost Exhibition introduced visitors to home-scale and campus composting practices promoted by the seminar. Many visitors of all ages showed great interest in learning about composting's role in reducing organic waste and greenhouse gas emissions. The campus compost project, which is currently under preparation, aims to recycle food waste generated by the university cafeteria through composting and to assess both the quantity of compost produced and its potential contribution to reducing emissions. This also marked the first presentation of the composting project by the seminar students, highlighting their commitment to practical, research-based action toward a sustainable future.
In addition, research posters by Singh seminar students on topics such as climate change, plastic pollution, and marine litter were displayed, reflecting the seminar's interdisciplinary approach to environmental problem-solving.

Following the popularity of the Bamboo Workshop held during the university festival, Associate Professor Singh and his seminar students will hold the Second Bamboo Workshop on Saturday, December 6. In addition to Bamboo Lantern Making and Bamboo Mölkky, this session will feature student presentations on environmental issues and bamboo utilization, as well as small-group discussions.
